Security awareness training
Security awareness training teaches employees to recognize and respond to cyber threats such as phishing, fraud and unsafe online habits, reducing the chance of human error leading to an incident.
Good programmes go beyond an annual slideshow. They combine short, regular lessons with simulated phishing emails, practical guidance on passwords and multi-factor authentication, and clear instructions for reporting anything suspicious. Content should reflect real threats your staff see, such as fake invoices, delivery notices and impersonated executives.
Many incidents start with someone clicking a link, approving a fraudulent payment or sharing a password over the phone. Your staff can be a strong line of defence if they know what to look for and feel comfortable speaking up. Insurers frequently ask whether training is in place, and it supports the reasonable safeguards expected under privacy laws.
Practical tip: keep training short and frequent, include everyone from the front desk to the owner, and celebrate people who report suspicious messages. Avoid shaming employees who fail a simulated test. The goal is building habits, not catching people out.
